Supporting the charity’s work

Some people think that the homeless don’t deserve to be helped!

The comment is sometimes made - ‘Why should I help the homeless when they’ve chosen to be on the streets?’ Homelessness isn’t a lifestyle of choice. No one sets out to become addicted to heroin and no one chooses to have a mental health problem. The women who turn up at the night shelter who are escaping domestic abuse do so out of desperation.

Once someone is homeless the road back to mainstream society is often very difficult and dangerous. Getting a bed at the night shelter is just the start of a process than can take many months. Only by tackling the underlying reasons why someone is homeless, can a lasting solution be found. They don’t come to Julian House because we’re the easy option – often we’re the only option.

Does the charity need support in kind?

Money is always a challenge for an organisation like Julian House but there are other ways that people can help. Volunteers play and important role in helping the various projects to function. Likewise there are other examples of ‘support in kind’ which can be of great assistance:

  • Second hand books for our popular bookshop
  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • Professional services such as IT support or equipment, design & print, publicity, advocacy, event venues
  • Non-perishable food e.g. tinned fruit, tea coffee, tinned vegetables

What sort of commitment do I need to make to become a volunteer?

You decide. Whether it’s a couple of hours a month or a regular session each week – any support that you give will be of great help. The main areas of need are in the day centre and night shelter – preparing meals, helping staff to set the night shelter up for the evening and other administrative tasks. There are also opportunities in some of the other projects – helping with some of the meaningful occupation activities or even in one of the allotments.
