How to volunteer

We have a wide range of volunteers of all ages and experience working in our shops. We always welcome new volunteers to our friendly teams, and we provide all training and tea and biscuits!

All we ask is that you bring enthusiasm and can commit to at least one (you can do more!) half day shift a week.

It’s a great way to meet new friends and gain invaluable skills in retail and customer service. Or, maybe you have a special skill you can bring to us?

We look forward to welcoming you – please contact the shop of your choice for an informal chat and an application form.

Roger has worked at the Walcot Street shop since it opened. Roger gives his time to Julian house because he wanted to support the charity and after retiring wanted to do something interesting. He said:

“I really enjoy working as a volunteer for Julian House. I love books, and working in the bookshop allows me to indulge my love of books as well as working as part of a friendly team. The work that Julian House does is so important in the community and I feel that I can make a difference to people’s lives just by giving up half a day a week.”

George at Shaftesbury Rd 001George came to work at the Shaftesbury Road shop as part of a young peoples work training scheme. George has enjoyed his time as a volunteer: “I have learned new skills in retail, display and customer service, as well as making new friends and learning to work as part of a team. Volunteering is a great way of gaining fresh skills in a less pressured atmosphere.”
