Gift Aid FAQs

1. What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a UK Government scheme that allows charities to reclaim 25p for every £1 donated by eligible supporters, at no extra cost to the donor. To qualify, you must have paid at least as much in UK Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax as the charity will reclaim on your donations.

2. Why have I received a Gift Aid repair letter?

Following a review, we identified that some older Gift Aid declarations we had no evidence for or used wording that does not meet current HMRC requirements. We are contacting you so we can correct this and ensure we can continue claiming Gift Aid on your donations

3. Did I make a mistake on my original declaration?

No. This is the reason for our contact. There may be no issue with your Gift Aid declaration; however, we do not currently hold evidence of it. Alternatively, the issue may relate to the original wording we provided, rather than any action on your part.

4. What is a Gift Aid repair or reaffirmation letter?

It is a letter that allows us to correct an invalid or incomplete Gift Aid declaration without requiring you to complete a new form, provided the details we hold for you are still correct.

5. Do I need to do anything?

If your details are correct and you are still eligible for Gift Aid, you do not need to respond. After 30 days, we can treat the declaration as repaired and continue claiming Gift Aid unless you tell us otherwise.

6. What if my details have changed?

If your name, address, or tax status has changed, please contact us within 30 days using the details in your letter so we can update your records.

7. What if I no longer pay enough tax to cover Gift Aid?

If you do not pay enough UK tax to cover the amount we would stop claiming gift aid on your behalf, please inform us as soon as possible.

8. Will this affect my regular donations?

No. Your regular donation will continue as normal. This process only affects the Gift Aid applied to your donations.

9. What happens if I don’t reply?

If we do not hear from you within 30 days and your details remain unchanged, HMRC allows us to treat the declaration as repaired.

10. Why are you contacting me even if I opted out of communications?

HMRC permits charities to contact donors for the specific purpose of correcting Gift Aid declarations, even if they have opted out of marketing communications.

11. I don’t remember completing a Gift Aid declaration—why contact me?

Our records indicate a declaration was made at the time you set up your donation, even if it cannot now be retrieved.

12. How do I cancel Gift Aid?

If you no longer wish us to claim Gift Aid, simply contact us using the details in your letter. Cancellation applies from the date you notify us.

14. Does Gift Aid apply to all donations?

Gift Aid can only be claimed on personal donations made by UK taxpayers. Donations made on behalf of others, companies, or in return for benefits are not eligible.

15. Can Gift Aid be applied to donations made under joint names?

Gift Aid can only be applied to an individual taxpayer’s donation. For joint accounts, one person must be named as the donor, and that individual must meet HMRC’s Gift Aid tax requirements. Please get in contact with the Fundraising Team at fundraising@julianhouse.org to let us know who is the tax payer.

16. Who do I contact with further questions?

Please contact our fundraising team using the telephone number or email provided in your letter. We are happy to help.
