Bay 6

Bay6 is a project with one simple aspiration: to ensure no-one leaving hospital sleeps rough.

We offer advice and support to patients who find themselves at risk of homelessness, and seek to both resolve their immediate housing issues prior to discharge, and then provide support to ‘move on’ into longer term, sustainable accommodation.

We currently work with Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust to ensure that their patients are not discharged as homeless; whatever the cause or circumstances.

Patients find themselves homeless for a variety of reasons. In addition to supporting rough sleepers and people with some experience of homelessness, we also help a wide range of patients who have never experienced homelessness before. What all have in common is a need to recover and stay healthy; which simply cannot happen without safe, secure accommodation when they leave hospital.

We work closely with colleagues within local (District Council) housing needs teams to ensure that their limited resources and accommodation is accessed appropriately and in a timely fashion.

In turn, we are ensuring that our local hospitals do not experience unnecessary delayed discharges, unplanned care and A&E attendances. Our evaluation in 2015 suggested a saving to the NHS in the region of £200,000 a year for each 100 patients we assist.

If you’re working with a patient who doesn’t have somewhere safe to stay when they leave hospital, please contact our team:
