Local council workers to take on 40,000 step challenge to help people experiencing homelessness.

This September, Sunday 26th, Barbie Markey and her colleagues Lynsey Hodges and Alice Knight, from South Somerset District Council are going above and beyond to help the community.

After a busy week working in the housing support department, they’ll be trekking 20 miles, around 40,000 steps, up hills and down valleys as part of Julian House’s Circuit of Bath Walk, to support people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

Barbie said: “Our team are all housing specialists at South Somerset District Council. We already work closely with Julian House particularly to accommodate prisoners on release, so it’s a worthwhile cause which inspired us to walk.”

The popular ‘Circuit of Bath Walk’, which is in its 20th year, will see the group, along with fellow participants, traversing the challenging but stunning countryside that surrounds the historic city. With some steep ascents to Lansdown and the misleadingly named Little Solsbury Hill, the group are determined to complete the full 20 miles and to raise as much sponsorship as possible to support Julian House and those in its services.

“I am looking forward to seeing some parts of Bath that I haven’t seen before and also being able to spend time with my colleagues, we all work at home now and rarely see each other face to face.”

Jessica Gay, Senior Community & Events Fundraiser of Julian House, said. “We are delighted that Barbie, Lynsey and Alice are taking part. They already work so hard to support some of our clients and now are going above and beyond to help us do more. Every year we support over 1,800 people to re-build their lives through accommodation, support work and training opportunities, whether they are experiencing homelessness, escaping domestic abuse, need support after prison to prevent re-offending or experiencing long term unemployment. COVID has hit everyone hard and we’re seeing this across all our services. We need to be there to help people when they need us. By being involved in our walk and raising funds, Barbie, Alice and Lynsey are helping us do just that!” To support Barbie and her colleagues, please donate here.
